I know it would be better for me professionally if I were more active on all social media, but I don’t have the time or energy. A wonderful young woman does my posting on Instagram, because I had to draw the line somewhere. I check this site, my professional Facebook page, and Goodreads Dashboard. I privately am on Neighborhood, and it often makes me want to tear my hair out. But there are some queries I feel I can help on. Mixed reviews on that.

Thanks so much, Bonnie. I had a great time revisiting characters in the Midnight series, just because I wanted to check in with them and see how they were doing. I’m glad you’re enjoying my work.

I am happy today because I am going to DragonCon in Atlanta over Labor Day weekend. I’m anxious, too, because I’m well aware that the Delta Variant is something to be feared. But I will be masked, I’ll social distance, I won’t be staying in a hotel, and I’m limiting my appearances. Above all, I’m vaccinated! I’m just doing a signing and a panel and attending the awards ceremony, because THE RUSSIAN CAGE got nominated for an award (Alternate History). I’m both nervous and excited at doing a public appearance after so long.

Unless DragonCon gets cancelled, I’m going. This is a sudden decision on my part. I have family in Atlanta, and won’t need to stay in a hotel. I’ll keep my crowd-mingling to a minimum. I’ll wear a mask. I’m vaccinated, and I’ve had COVID. So I’m hoping this isn’t stupid on my part, but I’m as safe as I can be.

I had withdrawn from Bouchercon already, but I’m so sad it was cancelled. Someday, we have to get back to gathering together. It’s so important for us to cross-pollinate, to reconnect, to meet our readers!

I agree, Bigmama, and I’m so sorry not all your relatives are vaccinated. I agree with your concern, too. A friend of mine’s grandson had to spend his first month at his new college quarantined. No way to start your college career! Since I live in Texas, the other surge state, I am worried too. We have been vaccinated and we have had COVID (not in that order!) so we should be pretty safe, if that’s possible, but I’m still worried. My husband has chronic asthma and we are not young. I have kept a mask in my purse all this time, and I think I’m going to be wearing it pretty soon.

I’m rejoining the world after working intensely on rewrites for THE SERPENT IN HEAVEN. audiobooklover, our donation crammed the local FotL shed completely full! I can’t guarantee there are no spaghetti fingerprints (we often read while we eat), but all our books were new and in excellent condition otherwise. Paula and I had to cancel our trip to New Orleans (sob) because of the rise of the cases of the new variant. We have been vaccinated, of course, but our husbands both have chest implants for heart ailments, and it just seemed negligent to bring home any germs. We were looking forward to seeing people. But it will have to wait a bit.

I’m still working hard on the fourth book in the Gunnie Rose world, now titled “The Serpent in Heaven.” It’s from the pov of Felicia, Lizbeth’s half sister.

The site is back up, now, aquasam. Thanks to Dawn, our intrepid web maven. I didn’t know it had vanished until two interviewers told me. I often check it daily, but I lagged last week, and this is what I get.

We’re back up! Dawn had to spend a lot of time on the phone, but finally the website is back on line and running. And we don’t even know why it vanished.

Some of it. I am an inconsistent market strategist, for sure. My Instagram gal and and my website maven do not receive up to date news from me. That’s the thing I don’t have time to do, apparently. I am not hungry for success anymore, I think.

It’s certainly been a long and winding road. But it lead to a great place.

Today I am happy, grateful, and just about ecstatic to say that Mystery Writers of America has given me the title Grand Master. Only one or two are named every year, and this year Jeffrey Deaver and I are the recipients of this honor. We have to accept virtually, and it would be more fun in person, but I’m not griping. The ceremony (which includes the Edgar Awards) will be on MWA’s Youtube page in the near future.

This is my fortieth year as a published writer. What an amazing career I have had. I could never have imagined any of this.
